  • I hope there sales get worse its about time they learnt many of us are now fed up of the constant price changes mealy to make things look better deal later. I now shop at Aldi and Sainsburys. Aldi for me doenst have a full range for a full weekly shop. My Aldi seems to get busy each year so they must be getting a larger market share
  • I much prefer Lidl, much much cheaper than the big four and the staff are friendlier and more willing to help
  • I prefer Tesco personally, its cheapest for me and my regular shopping their Value products are much nicer than Asda or Sainsburys.

Yes prices have gone up, but so has prices everywhere else.

As for clubcard points, at least theres still some rewards, unlike Asda that dont do anything.

I don't see how spending money to get some 'points' back, to spend yet more money at Tesco is a 'reward'

the Clubcard scheme costs Tesco millions to manage (in return they get detailed data on who is buying what) and that cost of course is hidden in the cost of the things they sell.

Personally I find their food bland, their stores cold and unwelcoming and the staff largely look de-motivated and uninterested.

Tesco suits me because I know how to shop for the best prices. I get the bulk of my food there, reduced and special offers, then cherry pick the rest of the shops for the bargains. I only buy the food I need, at the price I want to pay, so I might as well go to my nearest supermarket, Tesco, and I might as well have the points because I needed the items anyway. Points don't encourage me to spend any more, and I don't spend my points in the store, you can get much more for them elsewhere. Your statement about their food being bland, is rather silly. How many lines have they got for you to choose from, hundreds of thousands I reckon.

The checkout staff can be as miserable as they like (they aren't), and the store can be freezing. I go for cheap prices, not to enjoy the experience of parting with my money.

You sound as though you are using the points correctly, i.e treating them as a 'bonus' on items you would be buying anyway. My comment was aimed more at the people that see Loyalty Points as some kind of charitable act from the retailers and don't understand that the costs of running and marketing the points schemes just push the prices up.

and of course not every item of food Tesco sell is bland, my comment was more that on average I have found their own-brand food to be more uninspiring than the other big supermarkets.

and I do agree that price/value should be the biggest concern when choosing where to shop. However in a competitive market, the staff, layout/experience of the store can be the difference between one store to another.

I'd like to add a comment.
We are so well trained that now supermarkets don't even need to give anything in exchange for us to use their reward cards and give them lots of valuable information about spending habits.
I was really shocked when in a recent thread people were getting all excited about having a waitrose card, which gave a vague promise of some discount vouchers tickets etc, but no points at all.
An they mentioned Iceland, at the other end of the spectrum in terms of cost and target market, do the same.
