We will be traveling down the A1M and leaving at J9 on Dec. 16th. What time does the traffic clear? Is it best to go anticlockwise? That is the way we normally go.

Yes i would go anti clockwise, however from approx 1pm when the lemmings all rush out to about 8pm when the surviving lemmings reach their destinations it will be bedlam as are all roads leading away from and around city's, there's not a lot you can do about it and not really much of an alternative unless you know the old roads.
Try putting your computer on google maps and clicking the traffic button on Fridays before you go around the time you expect to travel that section and see how it develops and what time it ceases.
If you can't leave it till later, simply take your time, take a flask, sit it out.
The funny thing is that up to lunch time Fridays are good driving days.0 -
I have to agree with gilbert and sullivan. I assume you are joining the M25 at J21a avoiding 2 junctions. It could also be worse than usual that Friday if people are taking an extended Xmas break.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

It's the M25. The concept of a clear time doesn't work. I've been caught in a ten mile jam at 3am.0

and the 16th December isn't the middle of summer; so there could be snow, hurricanes or any other weather conditions that'll turn it into an even bigger car park than usual0

Anti-clockwise is best from the point of view of overall miles, roadworks and avoiding the Dartford Crossing.0

To be honest it all depends where your going.Your OP doesnt state this and if your going to kent or East Sussex then why go anti clockwise at all?"If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

It wasn't everso clear but it appears the OP is coming off at M25 Jct9, which is either Reigate or Leatherhead IIRC.0
