Certain government departments (DWP and IR for a start), have had access to bank accounts for ages.

And, their powers are being increased all the time.

Unfortunately, we live in a society that is ever more Big Brother - I recently phoned for a Chinese to be delivered, and just on the basis of my telephone number coming up on the restaurant's display, they told me who I was and where I lived..........

Then we have the banks all sharing information and selling it to people like catalogues. :(

We have sites on the net that list every address, who is living there, what they work (or not) as, how much they paid for their house etc., etc.,

    Frightening really.

Nothing much can be kept secret any more.

    Lin :(

I must say that I do not get everyones concerns.... take the chinese example someone else has given, I think this is a good thing (though I suspect they had ordered from the chinese before which is how they did it as a reverse lookup on a telephone number isnt allowed though possible from public directories) as it firstly removes the struggle that can be of getting them to get your address correct and secondly stops prank calls asking for food to be delivered to someone else which ultimately pushes the prices up for everyone.

A big benefit of big brother looking at you is the reduction in crime, and in these examples in particular theft/ fraud. If you have nothing to hide then you should have no fear of the government seeing how much salary goes into your bank when you after you have filled in a form to tax credits and it saves you having to gather all your old payslips etc and send them off yourself.

There has to also be some level of realism about the extent of the "invasion of privicy" too - no one has proposed any form of scheme where your neighbour that works in the local chippy can simply log on somewhere and find your current balance.

My local taxi company does that. Was all confused when they went "We know where you live"...

Err.. it's because they record it on their records to speed the call through next time... it's not rocket science!

Well, I hadn't used the Chinese before, so that answer bites the dust.
