I have sold a number of items on Ebay for a friend,I now need to add up what I owe them. I paid the postage out myself,so,could someone just check out that I understand fees ok as there are about £500 involved.
Eg,I sell one item for £16, the fee is according to paypal,£1.08. I paid the £4. postage. I need to give my friend £14.92?

I sell a piece of furniture, for £200,The buyer pays by paypal (I know this was not ideal, but A third party handed it over, collection only, and I didnt want them having to handle the money),do i just check paypal fee and deduct that?
Am I missing off anything here?:o
The friend has been very generous to me in the past, and I dont want to make anything here, but I can't afford to lose either.

Don't forget the listing fee and the Final Value Fee (approx 10% of selling price)

The amount buyer pays you minus
    The listing fee
    Ebays Final Value Fee
    Paypals Fee
    The Postage Cost

    Then past the rest on.

Also factor in any costs involved in relisting if item didn't sell first time.

Just remember to keep all your proof of postings for 180 days as that is how long the buyer has to make any sot of claim against you for a refund.

I know this is already done- but selling for mates is a vert bad idea. What happens for instance if in a week or two's time a buyer expects a refund for item being different to what he expected (SNAD) ?

I agree with soolin. Don't sell for mates it always ends in tears with someone out of pocket a broken friendship and sometimes suspended accounts.

Show your mate how to sell themselves.

Thanks.I usually started the items off at a highish price and listed on freee listing days,as I couldnt risk selling anything too cheaply,so in the MAIN I had no listing fee.
I do get confused between final value fee and paypal fee,so in the example of the clothing item, the 1.08 must be paypal fee and the ebay listing fee is found where?
THis isnt exactly a friend, but a kindly well off person who recently has given us furniture he has tired of,that would have cost me iro £5-£8,000 if I had bought it myself (not that I could afford the quality meself).

He is very generous and pretty much offers me quite a bit of stuff, for myself, but if i dont need it,I will not take advantage of his generosity, and sell it and give him the money-hes amazed he has sold his unwanted stuff (actually high quality top end clothes and furniture!Often new,or worn once). Its a case of how the other half live,he wouldnt do ebay himself!

If you look at your current bill/account with ebay it will show the fees payable. These are collected once a month.

You say the £1.08 must be paypal fees- so go check in your paypal account. as that will show the full amount you received less the paypal fee element.

How long ago did you sell all these items BTW- have you allowed time for the items to be delivered safely?

Thanks Ssoolin,I have been selling these over about 6 months.I will leave a significant time to allow for the latest ones to be ok'd.He is the sort of person who,if I (HE) were to lose out,he woulndt even be bothered about the money.I did sell one item of value,by post, but sent it trackable and it was problematic but ebay backed me.He trusts me to sell them and give him money,he isnt totting up what I am selling, just grateful for any few hundreds that come his way for stuff he would have given away anyway, its pocket money to him.
In the example I gave of the item of clothing, paypal read as 14.82 received,so does that mean there were no listing fees (think I started that one at free .99p listing, mistake I don't start things that cheap now)))Most of the clothing i sell are going for 6o to £80 pounds ish

No - paypal will not show the ebay fees. Your ebay fees will show in your ebay account. The only time paypal will show ebay fees is if you elected to pay your ebay fees via paypal and then once a month they will bill you for the lot and you'll see one payment out of paypal.

However if you have already been selling for 6 months then these fees will already have been paid via some method or other.

  • I have a pot of his money sitting in my account,I have also given him some cash directly from collect items.I have paid the fees myself out of my account, knowing i would have to sit down and work it out at some point.

  • I also pay off my fees as a one off payment to keep up to date, fairly often,is this the right thing to do,or does that cost more money to do like that?
