Missing drain covers - scrap metal thieves

Something that's been happening in our area. Thieves are taking drain covers, the council assumes to sell as scrap metal. The council are putting cones over the affected drains but obviously something to watch out for, particularly cyclists.
Having said that, I tell my husband off for being too close to the kerb if he's running over drain covers.

Been going on for some time.
Don't rely on the council putting out cones, you could be in for a nasty shock.0 -
And even if they do, yobs will think it highly amusing to remove them.The_Turner wrote: »Don't rely on the council putting out cones, you could be in for a nasty shock."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
Please report these incidents to your local council's Highways Dept IMMEDIATELY.
They should replace them straighaway or as a very temporary measure, they will put a large metal plate over the manhole. If it's a carriageway gully (looks like a metal grid next to the kerb), they may place a piece of a 600 x 600 paving flag cut to fit within the gully opening as a temporary measure.
Not replacing them will leave them open to claims under The Highways Act 1980.DFW'er - Lightbulb moment : 31st July 2009 - £18,499

as said report them because someone is going to die0 -
Happened around here too.....
What I don't understand is when the pie people roll up with these things, the dealers must know they're stolen drain covers, so why the hell do they accept them?
In my opinion they're as bad as the people stealing the f**king things in the first place!!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Most scrap theft is done very overtly, by men in marked vehicles with flashing amber lights and bright green clothing.
Scrap thief's refer to Hi-viz clothing as "urban cam" as everyone thinks you must be some kind of official authority if you were a hi viz jacket...Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Scrap dealers don't care.
I occasionally deal with a place that does scrap metal and scrap electronics. Over the years me and my partner have managed to hoard a fair amount of computer kit from companies that were getting rid. I'm not just talking crappy Dell desktops and the like (though there were a few of those) but large machines that once cost 6 figure sums as well. A lot of it still has corporate asset tags firmly attached.
Decided to get rid of it all, went to the scrap place. They have posters up everywhere about how they don't take stolen goods, that they record all addresses and they require ID.
They asked me for my address, they didn't bother to check it, didn't ask me for any ID.
Another guy rolled up with about 30 pieces of scaffold pole sticking quite a long way out of the back of his Peugeot 405 estate, again they took them and no ID was checked.
As an aside, someone also rolled up with a washing machine sticking halfway out of the back of a Ford Ka. That one was probably genuine but no idea how that washing machine didn't end up on the road!0 -
Round here there have been a lot of these thefts, we are a popular place for 'fellow members of Europe' to visit, and this time of year its always the same the criminal tourists arrive to make some money for Christmas during the darker days. Anything thats not welded down goes. The council have been very quick to replace the drain covers, they have new non metal ones made out of some super strong plastic. Great idea!0

It's amazing what you can get away with wearing a Hi Viz suit.
Mate had a nearly new Megane 225 Turbo sport jobby, parked up in council car park in "Skeggy", came back 3 hrs later and gone.
CCTV footage showed 2 guys in yellow park behind it with a flatbed and simply haul it up and away, no one batted an eyelid :(:( Trully was gone in 60 seconds:cool:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
