a light with a timer switch is a good idea.
you can get the ones with a random timer now. an exterior door light is also a good idea.
anything to persuade the scumbags to try a neighbours house instead.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I shut curtains but leave doors ajar and leave a light on in the kitchen which shows enough light at the front to suggest that the house is occupied.

My personal feeling is that leaving a radio on is an even greater deterrent than just showing a light.
  • If you go out just have a light one where its prominent that is cheap to run ie living room
  • if you want to pretend somebody is in the house, you need more than one light on timers.
Bedroom, bathroom, hall, kitchen... set them to go on and off randomly so it looks like somebody is actually in the house.

We have two standard lamp lights (Low energy bulbs) on timers that go on, whether we are there or not.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I leave a lamp on a timer if i'm out.
Something i saw advertised which i thought was a good idea was a light that flickered to give the effect that there was a Tv on, one of those may be more of a deterrent on a timer.

    Found it.

I am concerned about this, especially at this time of year.

I leave for work at 4pm and my daughter doesn't arrive home until 8.30pm. The porch is illuminated most of the evening anyway, the lounge is lit and is visible from back and front of house, and a different bedroom light each day, all energy saving light bulbs. I also leave the radio on and my next door and back neighbours know the house is empty then.

Despite this, the biggest giveaway unfortunately, to anyone in the know, is the fact that both cars leave and return to the driveway like clockwork.

these are pretty cool, a panel of leds change colour, simulating the presence of a tv - automatically comes on when dark. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fake-TV-Intruder-Deterrent-FTV10/dp/B004ZDJCDE/ref=pd_sim_ce_7

Leaving a light on in my house is a bit pointless, I have binds and black out curtains on all windows so once pulled no light shines through. But I do have external security lights installed front and back of house.
  • I don't leave any lights on if we're out, I don't see the point. Since the living room and bedroom are at the back of the house, it probably looks like we're out even when we're in. We have an automatic security light outside but I don't really like it, it's too bright and shines right in my eyes as I come up the path. Was already installed though.

Our house doesn't look like a house so and is not visible to anyone who doesn't know it's there.
    Intriguing... :)
