    I would point out that of course manufacturers are prone to optimising their cars for the EU fuel efficiency test cycle - it's where the emissions figures come from and even quite an insignificant (and completely irrelevant to the real world) gain in economy can bump it down a tax band, and that's seen as a huge selling point.

    Incidentally, you are aware you're ruining the fun for the rest of us? I call that selfish...:p

    As above - see also, the Euro NCAP safety tests. They came in years ago, manufacturers worked out how to pass them, and now no-one would buy a new car that ONLY gets 4/5 for passenger safety as so many of them are up at 5. They're even chasing pedestrian safety now, hence all these big blobby bonnets that cars have so the pedestrian has a nice soft landing and doesn't hit the engine. That's great and all, but it put an end to pop-up headlights!
