Birthday Present (9 years old)

Son's birthday in 18 days, said all year he wants a laptop, so went to look at some today. Budget is around £200 so was net books we were looking at. Changed his mind so now stuck as t hat to get him! He's unsure himself as well.

Any ideas?!

(he's got a ps3, Xbox and had a Wii. Doesn't want a handheld console either).

Appreciate all replies!

  • Ipod, new games for his consoles, tickets and tour to a football match, if he likes football.
  • Doesn't want an iPod, or an iPhone 3GS. I take him the footie regularly and his Mum's getting him 1 of 2 games he wants. The other I'm getting as one of his Xmas presents. Thanks for the suggestions though.

He's 9. He has an XBox, a Wii, and a PS3. He doesn't want "an Ipod, or an Iphone 3GS".

I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the things this little boy has been given so far, never mind trying to top it! Whatever happened to books and legos or Playmobil at that age? I don't even know what to recommend here because I fear the boy is used to so much. Whatever are you going to do when he's 15 and wants a 7th Gen Ipad? Or a WIFI car? Because I'm pretty sure "we can't afford it" is not going to cut it!
  • My DSS got a trip to London for his birthday 2 weeks ago ( he was 8 ) and he loved it.

How do you know the OP won't be able to afford it?

If you still think a laptop is a good idea then you can try https://www.studentcomputers.co.uk they do recon laptops. I got one for my DS1 for £99 that has enough ooomph for him animation projects.

  • The "I can't afford it" line does work, he saw a Dell laptop (£369). Told him he's got £200ish but didn't want a net book. He has what he wants, if I can afford it. If not he has something else.

Thanks MG I'll take a look at that site.

Trip to London sounds like a good idea as well.

I have an Xbox. No Wii, no PS3, no iPod, no 3GS..

How about getting him some appreciation of family rather than items. He's already spoilt so dont be suprised when he doesnt want to spend any time with his family through his teen years and expects high value items rather than things that actually mean something.

I'd try taking him on a day out. A theme park, a zoo, to see some racing cars or similar. Some quality time with family rather than encouraging him to wreck his eyesight and rot away.

Perhaps as his birthday is so close to Christmas, you could say to him that he can have a laptop but that will be his birthday and christmas present combined.

    Does he like board games?

I think at 9 years old, he's far too young for an i-phone. If you can afford to spend money like that on him then fair enough, but it will really do him no favours as he will come to expect the lastest gadgets when he's older.

I wouldn't have told him how much you have to spend on his present, it shuoldn't be about how much it costs.

I agree what about a day out and see if he wants to bring along a friend?
