Im afraid so. Though some companies do it for free. With all companies you have to pass a credit check or pay a deposit which you return within a year.

May i ask why you feel a company should pay an engineer to come out, and for all the equipment required without passing the cost on to the customer who requested it?

It is also my understanding that prepayment meter prices are in line with the companies standard prices for credit meters.

The charge is accurate and as dude89 stated, Eon may not be the company whose engineer it is that comes out, it is a cosmetic meter exchange, i.e change is because customer would prefer a credit to prepay meter. The rates on a prepay are the same cost as the Eon standard paid by cash cheque or card every three months, main benefit is that if you set up mdd will be able to go on to a competitive tariff as greater range of pricing options for customers who pay by mdd, speak to eon about them, you'll probably be able to recoup the £51.06 by paying mdd and getting a cheaper unit rate deal.

You aren't being charged to change to DD, you are being charged £50 per meter for the labour involved in changing the meter, and the cost of the new meter. The actual cost to the supplier is much more than £50.
PPM's cost the same as Standard tariff.

    Hi woody385,

All the info posted so far is correct.

We do charge just over £50 per meter to change pre-payment to credit.

This is to cover the cost of the appointment.

We would also ask to perform an external credit check, request you to pay by monthly Direct Debit in the future and we will ask if you have lived in your property for over 12 months if this is rented.

The pre-payment unit costs are the same as out standard prices, but you can't receive the discounts with the pre-payment.

I hope this clears things up a bit for you.

    Helena :)

  • We have bought a house and found that prepayment meters are installed. We wish to change prepayment meters and go to monthly direct debit payment. We have occupied the house since July 2011, and previously had an account with Eon in a rented flat for 3 years.
Eon originally told us that they would remove the meters for a charge if we had a previous account, if not we would have to wait for 12 months.
When we approached Eon with the previous account number they refused to even consider the request. They refused to do wi a credit check or any investigation whatsoever.
    How has this situation arisen?

British Gas changed mine for free. Best check with them first but you may find changing to them is a good move.

Yeah, I would recommend changing to BGas if they will take you.

Eon obviously don;t want your business so why stay with them?

    Hi d0gsb0dy,

I'm not sure what has happened here, I think you may have been told wrong :o

If you own the house we would consider removing the meters as long as we didn't put them in to collect a debt (I can see this isn't the case for you).

As you know we would charge just over £50 per meter to cover the cost of the appointment, you would also need to pay future bills by Direct Debit and we may want to do an external credit check.

As you have had an account with us previously we can also check this.

There is a department at E.ON that deal with changing PP meters for credit meters, if you need any more info just email me your details to the email address in my profile page.

    Thanks
