    I've not done it yet, but I'd certainly consider it if I'm going away to a concert or something similar, where you're only going to be there for the one night. Take a roll mat and sleeping bag and you've got space for a friend on the floor.

    this would be absolute madness, and is probably the quickest way to get thrown out of most hotel establishments.

    Yes, hotels have maximum occupancies. aside from that, this would inevitably result in a disturbance to other guests.
