Would you drive 3 hours for an overnight stay in Cardiff??

Hi there:wave::wave::wave:

Some months ago I found a good deal on a Travelodge in Cardiff for this Saturday so booked it.

We are 2 adults and 2 children (boys aged 9 and 11) and live in about a 3 hour drive away.

I am now wondering if its worth the drive??

We have never been to Cardiff before and have Tesco vouchers changed for Bella Italia and Cafe Rouge so thats lunch and dinner sorted.

Any suggestions on anything else to do?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Nikki

I would travel for 3 hours. I used to drive from the Highlands to Edinburgh which was a 3 and a half hour journey. It's a day out/experience OP that is at reduced cost to you, just do it. :)

  • Cardiff is great these days. I drive from Derby to just past Cardiff to see family and friends and come back the same day - it's not that a hardship.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Having looked at the Cardiff website they have an openair ice rink and some crafty market stalls, lunch and dinner sorted and non-refundable accommodation booked.... thinking it may turn out to be a nice little pre Christmas break.

    Thanks Guys!!

Yeah the Winter Wonderland is lovely... the shopping centre in town will be manic but there's also a great outlet village just down the motorway by Bridgend! Could be worth a visit on Sunday before you drive home..?

The Christmas market stalls are a bit bleugh, but you can get a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate which is nice in the cold

Get a tour of the castle if you can - it's right in the centre, next door to the market stalls, but not terribly cheap... and Bute park is fab and free but possibly not as much fun in winter (and it's only open during daylight hours).

  • I would. I drove 3 hours to Birmingham weekend before last for an overnight stay with the girls. We left 8am, got there 11am so had time to shop before lunch, more shopping after lunch, headed to hotel, got changed, went out for night, checked out next morning, more shopping, left 4pm, arrived home 8pm after dropping off friends. It didn't feel too rushed at all.

Obviously you have kids so may be different with them. Cardiff is a great city. The main shopping centre is big, the winter wonderland is lovely, castle is fab, nice parks, cardiff bay has lovely restaurants, there are free museums. Plus as Badger_Lady says there is the outlet shopping centre in Bridgend, and another similar one in Culverhouse Cross.

    Enjoy!!

There's no outlet at Culverhouse Cross - it's just a regular large retail park (the closest thing to an outlet there is TKMaxx).
