my cars been writen off.

my car was parked outside a friends house and someone reversed into it, left their details and have accepted blame.

i had some one from a garage come and inspect the car for damage and arrange for things to happen.

since this i received a phone call saying the cars a catagory c write off complete loss.

they said someone will call me next week to arrange a cheque to be paid out to me,

as its been classed as a write off when it only has a small crack in the front bumper, am i able to still use the car, or will they take it off me and scrap it? will my insurance company be told that its a write off from the mans insurance company and say it cant be insured? even tho its a tiny crack in the bumper?

You can use it as long as it’s roadworthy

If it’s a CAT C and you buy the salvage off the insurance company then you can carry on using it but you will need to get a VIC (identity) check done before DVLC will send you tax reminders or a new V5 so don’t part with the old ones.

Existing tax & MOT remain valid until their normal expiry dates, insurance depends on your policy T&C, there are a few firms that won’t insure write offs but reading your policy documentation will tell you all you need to know.

You’ll need to notify your insurance company of the accident but for information only and tell them you are dealing direct with the third party insurance.

    Repairing it is optional

Lets hope this is one of the lazy, internet based companies and you will receive a handsome (negotiated) cheque for your damages and the car will never actually be declared anything untoward on the database.

Erm, no not always. Category D allows this but Category C is more serious and suggests potential structural damage. Category D is bymper scratch/minor damage. Category C suggests that this car may have other issues.

No not always. Tax is unaffected but the MOT is pretty much voided by many insurers. Whilst its still technically valid most insurers won't reinsure the car until its been MOT'd again to ensure the vehicle still meets the minimum standards of safety.

Category D is a lot easier to deal with. They send you a cheque to keep you sweet, you take a mild knock on the premiums but you can carry on driving (and even then I had to get it MOT'd again). Category C is a pain in the grass. I went through it the year before last and the entire process was full of frustration.

Good grief where do you dream this stuff up from? VOSA are in control of MOTs, not any fly by night insurance company and a VIC (needed for docs for a Cat C) is purely to prove the car is not a ringer, nothing to do with a safety check.

Whose said the car is a write off? You don't make it clear.

I am assuming it's the garage appointed by the insurance company not by reading your post a garage you have asked.
