Faulty doorchime kit, purchased June/July 2011

Hi all, can anyone offer any advice on the following.

I purchased a Volex wirefree door chime kit from B & Q approx June/July this year. The unit was set up and installed without any problems and has been functioning correctly. I noticed today the door chime wasn't working. I followed the written instructions to reset the unit and changed the batteries but the door chime still doesn't work. I emailed the Volex company support division who said it sounds like the unit is faulty and that I should try and get a replacement from B & Q.

I no longer have the receipt for this purchase. I do have a credit card statement which shows I made a purchase at B & Q. I did purchase a number of items in this transaction so the transaction amount is not the same as the price of the doorchime kit. I will call B & Q and see what there response is but can anyone offer any advice on what my rights are before I call.

Thanks kindly.

You have the right (presuming it is less than 6 months old) to have a repair, replacement or refund for the door chime. B&Q have the right to decide on which of these options they take.

So if you take the door chime back to B&Q, along with a copy of your card statement, more than likely, they'll just swap it for a new one. (or possibly a refund, but I doubt that. They wont want to go through the effort of replairing it, unless it is a VERY expensive door chime, as it wont be cost effective for them)

All you need is proof of purchase, and a card statement satisfies that.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

And they should be able to correlate your CC number with their copy of the receipt, so don't worry about the values not being the same. :)
  • Thanks for your replies :) Based on my CC statement it looks like I purchased the product end of May so slightly over 6 mths. I think it cost approx £25 so not hugely expensive but enough to make me annoyed that it's only lasted 6-7 mths. I've just spoken to B & Q. They won't accept the CC statement as proof of purchase but they've said if I bring the product back they will get there electrician to confirm if the product is one of theirs and if so it sounds like they will replace it.

a CC statement is a valid proof of purchase for any item if you dont have a receipt
