your thoughts if you wouldnt mind..........

hello!!!

we got engaged 3 weeks ago whilst on holiday now we are home i would like to start saving for the wedding.

we dont want to get married till im 25 so it will be september 2016 a long way off yes!

i have a 20 grand car loan and a uni degree to pay back and i dont want to start a marriage and babies with a massive debt hence the saving now.

we dont want a overly lavish day just close family and a few friends neither of us are in any circles we both have a couple of very close friends.

one how much should we aim to save and two how much did you spend on your weddings and was it worth it?

I'm not married, so I can't answer these questions, but there is a wedding board down a bit further....I think the name has changed to involve Christmas, but it'll change back soon, and there is a lot of people there who are either planning weddings or have just got married.

    Congratulations!
  • Personally I would get rid of the car, at what 21 years old? £20k car loan is massive, in fact at any age it's massive. Then I'd start saving for a house deposit, which I would put as a priority over a wedding, but that's just me.

edit: I didnt really answer your question sorry. I'm not married but if I was I wouldnt want to spend more than £5k

20k car loan?!?! If you're really serious about saving for your wedding, get rid of the car! My sums suggest you're 20, do you still live at home or with your OH?

How much uni related debt do you have? Is it all student loans? If so this isn't immediate debt and you will only pay back what you can afford. I guess this issue depends how keen you are to clear it?

But the 20k car? Wow, just wow.

congratulations on making the biggest mistake of your life! you mentioned the car loan. 95% of the replies will focus on your car and telling you to get rid of it, instead of answering your actual question,

You could probably do it for under 3k depending on how much you want to spend on the rings which are the most important things as they are eventual heirlooms.
Good for you, you're forward planning, a put more time into the wedding than the marriage itself.

  • Agree with everyone else £20k for a car is crazy at 20, the insurance must be massive as well.

Unless you have a good job and your earning a very good salary, you should get rid of it asap! I'm guessing the loan is over at least 5 years, so by the time you have paid off the car it will be worth sod all.

Sell the car, get a car worth no more than £5k, then save the difference in loan payments for the wedding/house.

Oh btw my wedding cost about £5k.
  • The kind of weddings other people choose to have and spend on them has nothing to do with what you may choose. Everyone has different priorities and time-scales to make up the savings necessary. A simple wedding could cost as little as £500.

And scheming-gypsy is right: 95% of posters will focus on that absolutely massively eye-watering car-loan. That's going to put a very serious spoke into any savings you need to acquire for quite some time. I hope that it's a really nice car.
  • But is it a £20K car loan or is the car loan and Uni debt totalling £20K?

Weddings can be as cheap or as expensive as you want them to be .....and its not true that the more you spend the nicer time you or your guests will have.

    Firstly Congratulations.

As for how much you will spend on the wedding, what you need to do first and foremost is decide on what you want and then get some quotes for venues, flowers etc. This will give you a rough idea on costing.

I am fairly confident that the OP meant her uni loans and one for her car totalled £20K.

£500 -2k is very sufficient for a small simple wedding such as you suggest you want. To answer your question, we had a small simple wedding this year and it was wonderful and wouldn't change a thing. It suited our taste, finances and priorities, and that is what it is about really - and you have time to be sure of what really matters to you.

I personally don't see our wedding rings as heirlooms - we bought what suited us financially and taste: £64 from samuels for OH this year: totally replaceable if it gets lost. It is a case of everyone is different and has different priorities.
It is possible you will probably both know a lot more people in 5 years time though.

    Oh, and congratulations!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
