Paintjob-facias/soffits & Downpipes

Hi guys-

Just being quoted £120.00 to paint front and back facias/soffits which are drab and starting to flake and 2 cast iron downpipes which are slightly rusty(especially at wall fixings). He said he will also fix back in 2 facias/soffits with silicon which had come loose and i hadn't noticed till now (must have been new year winds as i occasionally check). Tbh the guys timing is spot on as he said he was working in area and handed leaflet over but we are thinking of selling and just want a tidy up job. House is a 2 bed semi-detached ex local. Would be grateful for any pointers and if quote is fair.He said it was a few hours work.

thanks & regards

the price sounds ok to me.
my house is probably about twice the size of yours soffit wise and i paid about twice that to have the same job done.
But things to be aware of: will he do any preparation (scrape off flaking bits etc)
is only one coat or will it be 2?
what kind of paint will he use?
if there are any problems like rotten bits what will he do about them?
(it isn't a big job to put some silicon on- make sure it's a professional type that will last outdoors)
all this may not matter much to you if you just want it to look good to sell.
I might add that I had lots of problems finding reliable people to do this job at a decent price. (but you might want to ask for references and check up on these first)
I'm sure some tradesmen will give you their opinion soon.

Mmmmmm sounds like its just going to be a bit of a bodge job.......
To do a 'proper' job you have to look at 1 man for 1 day plus materials.
£250 to £300 incl VAT would be a price for a good job well done.
If you just want a cheap blagg it on job you cant ( hopefully !! ) go wrong for £120.......
But he might just find a few 'extras' to bump the price up once he has pulled all your facias and soffits off
  • Thanks for replies guys-

I had the guy booked for yesterday morning and he didn't show and tbh i'm quite glad! I asked about this at work and was told pipes would probably need red oxide prep before he coats it and that would take a few hours to dry on its on. Also, i dont think soffits have perished but what do i know! They appear to have just come away at edges where next one starts. I have got a builder coming in to do other work and he said he would nail them back in for me. I'll hassle this DIYER at work for paint jobs to see if he can do or knows anyone that can. Wish i had head for heights and i would try myself!!!

ps-any painters out there from Ayrshire want this??(worth a try!!)
