Faulty Electricity meter

Hi all
I moved into a rented house on 26th October this year & decided to switch from Scottish Power to EDF. I took a meter reading of 07177. I have since received an estimated bill of £232.69  so I called them this morning to see why they'd estimated so highly. I also gave them a reading as of today (07177). it only then occured to me that the reading I had given them on the day I moved in was printed on the bill as 11771 (nearly 5000 units over the number I actually gave them). It also occured to me that the reading I took today was exactly the same as the day I moved in!?!?!? There is a card slotted behind the meter also with the number 07177 hand written on it, I would assume this was left by the installer of the unit.
Would like to know if anyone else has had similar experiences & if so, where do I stand legally on this?
Thanks in advance

sounds like your meter is faulty tell them and when they change it they will take another reading some time later and estimate your usage or they will just estimate an average useage and bill you on that.0
