Figs and Woodlice

My rather nice fig tree produces lovely figs, and the local woodlice think so too, as soon as they start to ripen they start munching. How do I stop these little blighters?

Comments

  • Would they finish ripening off the tree? I think I would risk it rather than let the little blighter's eat them :)

Some of that sticky anti-bug tape on the stems so they can't get to them?
  • I have found woodlice to be an absolute menace in my greenhouse and on my allotment. They have done exactly as you describe to my tomatoes, squashes, peppers and aubergines.

I have read several article which basically say woodlice only occupy the fruit which has already been attacked by slugs. I am inclined to disagree that this is the only damage they do - I didn't have a slug problem in the greenhouse but I definitely had a woodlice problem.

I decided to use the grease bands that you get for fruit trees next year and in my greenhouse use vaseline on the legs of my greenhouse staging to try to stop them. I will also be going over the greenhouse looking for gaps in the structure and filling it with silicone.

I am afraid I resorted to pouring a kettle of boiling water over large colonies I found as I was really over-run with them at one point. Not nice but I didn't know anything else (organic) to use.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
