Looks like a yellow tomato without seeds. Texture of a melon. Tastes nice, it's sweet so it's definatly a fruit (but it doen'st have seeds so maybe it's actually a veg) doesn't taste like a tomato

The only thing I could find on it is how to grow one but it does say how it tastes and there is a picture (but you might need a magifying glass) HERE
When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt ;)

What is Sharon fruit? Is that what Essex Girls eat?

I think its also called a persimmon

My dad was from Essex, only the best fake burberry for me!! Fruit? Whassat then? Do they do it in macdonalds;)

quote from the bbc website - hilarious!
They really are strange fruits. They come from the East, and I believe the Israelis have developed one called the Sharon fruit. They have to be allowed to go soft, you let the frost get to them, or at least let them mature, because otherwise they are quite sour. As we say in Norfolk, they'll draw your backside up your elbows!

anyhow befor eanyone tells me off for going off thread, I enjoyed getting my bargains yesterday, but now the only think i need to get is some toilet paper and a pound of minced lamb. Thats not going to take me all week is it!!!???

Wow! that's really impressive Sarah! We're short of proper markets locally (other than the Farmer's market) but I'll definately be scouring my local butchers and greengrocers next shop :D . You're an inspiration.

  • Hi Sarah
Do you mind me asking what buchers you went to?
Im from Leicester myself. Even went to the markey last Friday afternoon. You did really well. To be honest ive always found the veg/fruit on Leic market to be quite expensive, but youve done well. On Friday I brought some muchrooms to last me for spag bol and chilli. When I got them home they were really manky and they went in the bin? Any tips for me or more bargain shops in the city centre you can tell me about?

I go to Leicester market occasionally but I never find real bargains. I think I dash in and out too quick because I can't stand the smell.
    I must try harder!

Well today I started the supermarket shuffle. I normally shop at Tesco's but I took my Tesco's shopping list to Morrisons (it was shut last week for conversion from Safeway). Anyway, savings from comparing prices and buying a 12.5 kg bag of value potato's rather than smaller bags totaled £79.60 if worked out yearly.

On top of that I picked up a £6 off if you spend £30 at Tesco's, just for the potato's! Bit of a result that.
I'll be doing the shuffle every week from now on and I'm sure there are more savings to find.
    Regards

    X

PS this is off my spreadsheet.

    Savings
    Granny smiths (each) Morrisons 0.11
    Granny smiths (each) Tesco's 0.17
    Frequency - weekly
    Yearly saving - Apples 30.98

    Lg Sage + Lg rosemary + 2 sm parsley = 1.61
    2 sage + 2 rosemary + 2 parsley (Tesco) 2.96
    Frequency - monthly
    Yearly saving - Herbs 16.20

    Morrisons own steam pack 0.99
    Birds eye steam packs 1.58
    Frequency - fortnightly
Yearly saving - Steam veg 15.34

One value bag potatoes (Tesco) 3.69
    5 bags times 2.5 KG (Tesco) 4.40
    Frequency - 7 weekly
    Yearly saving - Potatoes 5.33

    Morrisons frozen carrots 1kg 0.79
    Tesco frozen carrots 1.15
    Frequency - fortnightly
    Yearly saving = Carrots 9.36

    Morrisons green label tea 0.69
Tesco 80 premium tea bags 0.81
Frequency - two and a half weekly
Yearly saving = tea bags 2.40

    Grand total 79.60

That's great Xbigman. Could you reduce it by another £16.20 and try and grow your own herbs? The herbs you seem to buy regularly are quite easy to grow even on a kitchen windowsill :)

Probably because their local Safeway was changing over to Morrisons, I got those vouchers from Tesco when my local Safeway changed.

In my trolley today is a brand new laptop and I am very excited :j

Off down to M&S to get something to throw in the oven for tea while I play with my new toy :rotfl:
