Morrisons - bargains, but a little bit 'cunning'

You've got to watch these shops. My local Morrison's were offering a great deal yesterday on Christmas sweeties. Boxes of Roses/Liquorice Allsorts/Heros etc were buy one for £4, get two free basically giving you over a kilo of sweeties for £4. Magic......
Then I spotted the Coke on a big stand something like
"1.78 each, or 2 for £3". It's not a great price, but it's OK.
However, just round the corner on the main isle not blowing any trumpets in 2 foot letters was this shelf flash:

A much better deal at £1 a bottle if you buy 4.
I admint, the offer is clear and easy to find, but I think it's a bit cunning - you walk past a big display of them at 2 for £3, and I'm sure many people will pick them up and then not bothering to venture down the soft drinks isle where they can find the same item available in the shape of a much better deal.
Still, I'll forgive them because of the cheap kilo of Liquorice Allsorts I managed to get

Hell Yea! I'm just hoping that Aquafresh is 'buy one get one free' sometime soon.....0 -
This was on Panarama last night. There were quite a few Morrisons ones that had that big red sign but the price was actually more then it had been underneath. They questioned the store but the store said as long as it had at some point for any period of time been a higher price, it was legal.
They also found that many 'value added packs' were more expensive then the smaller alternatives, although I thought this was common sense.
Was an interesting program. They didn't get anything done about it. Just said it was unlawful and misleading, and then the program ended. Definitely worth keeping an eye out while shopping though!0 -
I have to agree. Whilst the Panorama program was a good starting point, many of us already knew that supermarkets were cunning and devious anyway.
Personally I was left with that "Well OK, it may be unlawful, so what are you going to do about it?" feeling.
ANSWER: Nothing.
Is it just the UK where this kind of thing goes on? Is it like it in the States too?0 -
When we were in America recently i was amazed that the supermarkets give you the deal price even if you just buy 1.
I bought various things in the supermarket that this applied too.0 -

Well, that isn't a multi-buy deal, then.
It's what is known as a 'price reduction' and they have just mislabelled it.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Free toothpaste mentioned in this weeks MSE email :-)Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)0

There seems to be a lot more competition in the states for grocery customers, and not so many national chains meaning that stores to offer more discounts of the type mentioned above (not really considered mislabelling there, more highlighting the chance to buy in bulk for those who want to) and seem more generous with their reductions including honouring vouchers for other stores, offering manager's discounts on whole shops and allowing store card holders to get a discount off their entire shop rather than collecting 'points'.0 -

They do something similar in Morrisons.
If there is say an indian meal deal for £10. You can buy each of the separate components that make up that deal for the deal price.0 -

If people shopping can't be bothered to read the labels and use some common sense they deserve what they get.
Panorama used to be a hard hitting current affairs program. Now all it does is follow the tabloids lead and does dodgy, poorly researched excuse for journalism.'The More I know about people the Better I like my Dog'
