Its a minefield i tried to register self assessment on line but it said i need a UTR number tthat i dont have .
I rang HMRC and they said i had to register self employed first then they would send me a UTR ,then register self assessment.
On the self employed form i filled in the subcontractor part then it asked me for my business name and business address as a area i had to fill in on the form .

When I registered as self employed, I put my own name as the business name and my home address as the business address.
I am not sure if CIS and sub-contracting make a difference, but would think not.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

https://www.businesslink.gov.uk has a lot of information on setting up as self employed, although much of if is not relevant to the construction industry.
If you search for CIS, it does cover some of the aspects.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Im devestated its all gone tits up, boss asked me how many hours i had done over the week last night and i said 50 .He said right at minimum wage thats just over £300.I told him he had said £8.50 a hour but he denied it.
I told him after 30% tax i wouldnt cover what i receive on benefits for housing and ESA. I would only net £4 a hour.
They finish for xmas on friday so no work anyway until Jan 4th and i was about to cancel the housing and ESA.
Now im in deep pooh as im not registered self assessment due to all the hassles and cant sign off as no money.
Whats the point of me registering self assessment and self employed now.If he sends me the money and pays the 30% tax im knackered as will get fined later for not being registered and lose my my benefits.I cant afford to sign off benefits now.
Basically told him to keep the weeks wages as it would cause me so much problems now.
I really wanted a new start and feel devestated.Any advise.
So much for getting back to work.0 -
Bad luck kevkj and I hope you find something suitable in the future. People like you are the real victims of this recession and not the average public sector worker.Hideous Muddles from Right Charlies0

Will the tax people hound me for one weeks self assessed tax if im not registered.although boss doesnt have my NI
number or a UTR.
Is the boss just like ly to keep the money.I dont know what to do but cant cancel my benefits now.
Worried sick about the tax situation and fines. They will probably talk to benefits now and they willl be cancelled.0 -

Generally have a lot of time for your posts chrismac but that is a little harsh - my wife would regard herself as an 'average' public sector worker in the Health Service - at least until she retired last year on ill health grounds after 32 years service on a pension of £6000 per year.
Depends on your definition of average, I suppose.0 -

You're worrying about a 'joined up' Government that doesn't exist. Forget about it.
If you're not taking the money - also forget about the SA as there's nothing to declare. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thanks for the reply but surely a 30% one week payment for tax will be paid on account for me when im not registered.0

At post #15 you were suggesting you wouldn't accept the money as it caused more issues than it was worth?
Whatever - as you're suffering a 30% deduction at source - if you do accept it. Then it isn't going to cause problems as that is 10% more than the 'registration' deduction. So you can simply go on to complete the SA registration - and then file in due course after April. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
