Not necessarily. If the sort code and account number were invalid it would do. However, they were valid at one point so the receiving bank might put it in a suspense account It's likely they would just send it back but it's probably worth checking.

OK not be noisy here what reason was it for the account to be closed with Barclay's?

In terms of a few years ago how long does not have to be exact or just a estimate.

By the way i do not work at any banks just saying if my words sound like a bank user on here lol.
  • About 3 years ago I sent a payment from my bank to a building society account I had closed some time before INSTEAD of the one I had recently opened.
The payment was bounced back - followed by a letter from the building society a few days later.

If the a/c is closed, it will definitely bounce back as it is sent to non existence a/c. It has happened to me in quite a few occasions.

What you need to make sure is that the a/c was properly closed as sometimes happen we thought it was closed but it was still open.

If the account is closed then it should bounce back. However, the big problem may be that if it's been closed for several years Barclays could have reused it for another customer. I don't know if they do this but I know the banks I have worked for in the past do. In that case you'll find it more difficult to get the money back, as many threads on here will testify.

  • I sent a BACS payment to an account which I closed THE FOLLOWING DAY, it did not use faster payments. I checked my account a few days later and it had bounced back.
