Is my letting agent trying to fleece me?

I agree with G_M's general point but would not have gone down the "meeting at school" route - picking up your kids is family time and as a parent I wouldn't welcome it being hijacked by a T/other business matters.markmcalear wrote: »Sadly I have never met her or seen her kids. Drop them a line if you don't have a phone number. Far too many LLs have no idea what their LA gets up to in their name. The LA may even seek to charge the LL a further fee too. If your partner can obtain a written reference from where ever she has been living up until moving back with you ( if renting) then that may help move things along.0 -
Nope, unless you are about to libel them;) Just that it may make it easier to identify you. Your LA may well trawl MSE........markmcalear wrote: »why? is it against site rules?0 -

Exactly. But people who are in denial of those facts may feel motivated to claim it is libel as part of their denial. So don't give them ammunition. Name them after it is all sorted in your favour if you like.markmcalear wrote: »Ive got nothing to hide. Stating facts doesnt equal libel does it?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Noted. Post in question has been edited0 -
Seems to me that your contract says that you and your immediately family are permitted to live in the property, you should just quote that clause back at them, and see what their response is to that. Even if your landlord agrees to add your partner to the tenancy agreement with no credit check, the agents are probably going to try to charge for producing a new contract with her name added to it.0

Your original question should read "HOW is my letting agent trying to fleece me?". If you work back from an assumption that they are trying to fleece you, it's often easier to spot how.0

It seems pretty to clear that they want to charge for referencing and admin fees are which are not needed and are also very very inflated.0 -

Absolutely. I never cease to wonder how an agent can spout things about the law when their knowledge of it is so limited, they require no qualifications whatsoever to set up in the business. Some of them come across with the most stupid ideas.
If they knew so much about it then why are they not lawyers?
You are entitled to have your family staying with you if you wish, you could even have a tramp off the street using your spare room, as long as you pay your rent it's none of their business.0 -
I'm in a similar situation. I rented out the property in Dec 2009 for 6 months and it has been on statutory periodic tenancy since 2010. During the two years I have had the lettting agent (who is standing in for the House owner) come in to do checks. Two weeks back when they came, they said that my wife needs to be added to the tenancy (she has been residing for 1.5yrs and they never bothered to say this all this time). I said ok.. and they send me a form, and later a new Short hold tenancy (AST).. for 6 months and a fees of £120.00. I dont want to pay up, but the more worrying thing is why should i sign up for a new AST!!!!! i might be moving home in a few months.“Don't raise your voice, improve your argument." - Desmond Tutu
