What happens when the line manager gossips about it with other staff?
What happens when the other staff start sniggering and taking the mick out of the ops lowered mood because they didn't get the job?
You don't seem to realise that these things happen. They may not be acknowledged but they do happen.

Yes, at my place of work we hate people that work out their skills gaps and then try and close them. God forbid they ask for feedback to help in this process!
We're not in the 1970s any more. Asking for feedback is a mature and good thing to do.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
You're assuming that all companies operate like grown ups. I've worked for many that don't and would ridicule anyone for the smallest of things yet alone whinging about not getting a job 2 grades above.0

Horrible when this happens, I've had something similar in the past, training somebody to tell me what to do.... lovely.
It may sound a bit airy-fairy but sometimes these things are meant to happen for a reason. This company aren't doing what they are doing to do you a favour, but I hope if you find another job and move on, you'll look back in the future and realise you've done better going somewhere else than staying and doing battle with this lot.Make £2025 in 2025

I am assuming it is a professional place of business and not a schoolyard0 -
Who did you submit your application to, and who is the decision maker with regards to who to interview ?
I agree with the others who suggest speaking to this person.
What I would say however, is to approach this person in a positive manner (i.e. explain that you are disappointed that you were not succesful on this ocassion, but you wanted some feedback so that you will be better prepared next time etc.).
You can then use this as an opportunity to show how you have developed over the years and are keen to continue to grow within the company.0 -

Exactly and many places aren't like that. Sure some are, they'll take the company responsibilities very seriously whilst others simply don't and they do really stupid things. I've worked for plenty of them hence I'm offering realistic "Anti-stupid company" advice.0 -

No you're not. You're offering advice based on the fact that you have worked from some poor employers therefore yoiu assume that all other employers are as bad, which is not the case.
OP - As was said early on, you have nothing to lose from speaking to HR, and indeed if the employer is a reasonable one, it may show them that you have ambition and are looking for advancement which could help you in the future.0 -

Thanks so much for the advice offered so far from everyone. I am at the point where I feel there is nothing to lose now so I have made an appointment with hr. Will have to see what happens next but either way I think it will be worth it to find out what they make of it.
I'm not worried about being embarrassed in my workplace for making a fuss. I think it would be worse to be passed over and be seen to accept it. Some things are worth fighting for.
Really appreciate the advice given on this forum and it is nice to feel that others understand my dilemmaThere are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0
