Thank you to everyone who has replied so far.

    Here is some further info:

It is an 05 plate Ford Focus.

I plan on keeping it for at least another couple of years.

I would not class it as being that old - so would rather not leave it. I'll probably scrape the rust off gently and then ?????

I like the look and price of that K-rust. I'm not sure from that webpage whether you should paint over it afterwards?

Will paint pens offer any sort of preotection?

I'm keen to get it sorted soonish - taking into account the weather and the fact that gritting will be done more often now.
Hopefully get it done this weekend - it's already been a week since I first noticed it.

If it's a small patch, go over it with the matching colour with a touch up can with a brush in the top.
It won't be a perfect finish, but it's be passable, and stop the rust.

The only way to fully remove rust is to cut it out - but this can be very expensive. Another option for a possible long term fix it to use something like suggested above or Dinitrol. You will need to spray on the rust treatment product, leave it to dry and then apply a protector over the top. You need to make sure the area is dry before applying anything as water will be trapped.

rust can be treated for curing the problem there is no need to cut a panel out your just making more work and a potentially larger area to rust in the future if the replacement isnt treated properly.

my advice would be to see a decent body repair specialist, ford has no special paint system so costs for meterials would be low. a panel should only require half of a 250ml paint pot to be added to the thinners/special water they use these days in the spray gun half a days work and a bit of time to cure in the bake oven. ive had larger peices of rust treated and whole large panel painted for £80 in an insurance approved body shop.
