I just want to pay BT but they will only accept a cheque

I had a small shop which I closed in September. I contacted all suppliers and utilities and provided a forwarding address for final bills. In November I telephoned BT as i had not received the final bill. I was informed that the final bill had been sent out in late september but that it was sent to the shop address. BT have acknowledged they sent bills to the wrong address and have said they will recall the debt from the debt collection agency (i have never had anything referred to a debt collection agency!)
They are adamant that the only way I can clear my balance is by paper cheque to their correspondence centrew in Durham. It will be a hassle for me to do this and it just seems really strange that a telecom company cannot process a telephone payment!
Can anyone here help or advise at all??
thanks in advance
