Rewire

Hi folks.

In the process of getting lots of quotes for a rewire of our 3 bed semi. Quote includes, the rewire, new consumer unit, a few new sockets, kitchen fused spurs and lighting and an extractor, and lights and extractor in the bathroom as well.

First quote came back as £4k

Second has come in at £1.7k (inc VAT)

Third £2.3k.

The second quote is freaking me a little, it's just so low, I don't know if should be biting his hand off or getting suspicious. I'm currently suspicious, I didn't get good vibes from him when he came round even though he asked lots of questions and took notes, I just didn't like him. Should I be taking the risk or go with a nicer tradesman at the slightly higher price?

Thank you for your advice :)

If you didn't like him I wouldn't use him. My parents had their house re-wired 15 years ago and it was very cheap and the guy did an awful job. They've just had it re-wired again for considerably more and the new electricians took a lot longer doing it and were horrified at the standard of the work done previously. They said the house was a death trap because of the previous electrician.

I'd be asking the highest quote people to justify their price given your other quotes, and I'd ask the second quote if there was any leeway and say that you've had a cheaper quote but you didn't really like the person. You never know they may be able to come down a bit more.
  • Thank you for your response Chunkychocky. The most expensive has come back saying he can't compete with the other two cheaper quotes, so middle quote appears to be the way to go. Thank you for your help :)
