Help! Switching suppliers - which is best?

All

Just after a little advice and would be so grateful!! - I am not too great at maths and some of these calculators online have confused my poor brain! I have been with British Gas for duel fuel for the best part of 3 years on a prepayment meter. I am looking to switch to monthly DD and also switch suppliers also.

My consumption for the previous 12 months on my annual statement was

Gas: 12788kwh
Elec: 1768kwh

British Gas is charging as follows:

Gas:
Tier 1 (first 2680kwh) - 8.756
Tier 2 (each kwh after 2680) - 4.036

Elec:
Tier 1 (first 720kwh) - 25.432
Tier 2 (each kwh after 720) - 12.079

I have spoken to EDF who say theres is cheaper - I didn't really understand the breakdown and they've given me prices of

Gas: 23.10 daily standing charge and then 4.080kwh

Elec: 14.70 daily standing charge and then 12.85kwh

Does this work out cheaper based on the consumptions I have given above? Help!!

Comments

  • The figures are:

    Bg gas = £641 Electric = £309

    EDF gas = £605 Electric = £280

So looks as if for once EDF were not telling porkies. That assumes both tariff figures either included or did not include VAT.

Use a comparison website and you do not need to do any calculations. The most important thing is your annual consumption which you know:).

Anyway a number passed over the phone does not explain the tariff terms and conditions differences. That is another reason to do an online comparison.

The comp sites are not confusing. You need 3 figures-your annual gas usage in kWh, your electricity ditto, and your postcode. All of which you already have,
Then that's it: the one at the top of the list is the cheapest.
Which for my region comes out with EDF Fix For 2012 being cheapest on your usage. BG is nowhere-about £128 more.
PS: there is no 'cheapest' supplier-it depends on usage and region.
