Cat Flea Treatment NOT Spot on

Options
Hi All

I am having terrible trouble de-fleaing my 16 week old kitten shelly. She is a toirtoseshell short hair but we reckon must have long hair in the ancestry as her fur is so thick and plentiful that we cannot get enough of it onto her skin to treat her.

Three times we've tried frontline or another brand and it always ends up in her fur. Therefore she is still infested.

We couldn't see any in petsathome but are there any flea treatment in tablet form or could a vet inject something. We are at our wits end

Many thanks

  • Here you go OP - this is (probably) the one you want:

I think the Vet is able to inject a flea treament, so it is worth a phone call. Also, comb your kitten very regularly with a fine toothed
flea comb. Have a small container with water and a drop of washing up liquid (it makes the fleas sink to the bottom) close by and as the flea comb catches the fleas, dunk it quickly into the water.

Finally, don't forget to treat your house!

I would definitely seek a vet's opinion regarding this and DO NOT give your kitten any more medication until you have done so. Although you say the Spot On treatment has ended up on her fur, some of it WILL have seeped on to her skin. She is only 16 weeks old and has already had three treatments of different brands which may or may not complement each other.

I appreciate that fleas are an annoyance, but the health of your kitten is much more important and you should seek expert advice before doing anything else.

Johnsons 4fleas is in tablet form but it only lasts a few days. It'll kill all live fleas then you would put on a spot on and treat the environment by spraying the carpet.

  • 4Fleas is excellent, but as another posted said, don't give her anything else til you have consulted your vet, drug interactions can be VERY nasty!

There used to be a flea treatment you added to the cats food. I think it did worms too. No idea what it was called but it was a little vial of white liquid you added to their food.
Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!

It was called program, my cat had that for years but when I asked the vet about it for our current cat I was told they didn't use it anymore.

Echo the advice not to put anything else on your cat and to consult your vet.

Our cat also has very thick fur which I have to try and part to put frontline on him, I can usually expose about an inch of parting but alot of it goes in his fur. It still appears to work though as he hasn't had any fleas for ages (touch wood). Make sure you treat your house to remove the existing flea problem and talk to your vet about when you can retreat you cat. I would also advise not to by OTC flea preparations from pet shops as I'm of the opinion they are a false economy, by some decent stuff from the vet.

Alot of people also swear by this for fleas:

but I'm not keen myself as I don't like the idea of the cat eating it when grooming.
    Hope this helps.

Shave a wee bit of fur on the back of the neck?
  • Program doesnt kill fleas, it just prevents them from breeding

Good tip, am I allowed to do it? or can I do it elsewhere on him?
  • The back of the neck is use as the kitties find it harder to reach that area. so are less likely to lick it off
