The problem with insurance I would guess that the death hasn't occurred here (when it might be covered, though it's probably a bit too long since the death) but there, where it probably won't, but worth trying.

Make sure the insurance company knows the full circumstances - if you ask them the wrong question they might say yes and then change their mind when they see the detail

Also, if your policy wasn't effective when the death occurred there could be a problem. But the time which has elapsed since then is likely to be the biggest issue. It was the death of an in-law at our ultimate destination that we claimed for. The airline wouldn't help because it wasn't a direct blood relative to either myself or OH.
As already said though, be honest with the insurers and see what they say.
I wouldn't hold out too much hope, but it's worth a try.

Can't you fly as booked and just get a train or coach or internal flight down the coast to Durban and back, to tie in with original booking? It's only like London to Newcastle isn't it?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I suspect your best bet is to take the flights as planned and book an extra flight (or bus?) to and from Durban from Johannesburg

If you no-show on the last leg, the rest of the itinerary will be cancelled. You best bet it to book another flight (or bus) from East London to Durbs, or rent a car for a day and drive it.
