Hi! It was possible a few years ago, certainly. Are you on a modular cours which accumulates credits? If so, it may be possible to transfer the credits to another University. I managed to switch from History and Politics at Aberystwyth to International Relations and History in Portsmaouth. This was about 5 years ago, but I believe it was a fairly new system at the time so if anything it may be even easier now.
I decided I wanted to change Universities over Christmas of my 1st year but went back to Uni after Christmas to give things one last try. I still wasn't happy so stayed on to take my exams at the end of Semester 1 and transferred to my new University immediately. I only missed the first week of the second semester at the new Uni. I have also heard of a few people doing this at the end of their first year, before they start their second year too. Not sure how easy it is after this stage tho.
Go and have a chat with the Student Counselling service (they were in the Union building where I was), I only went in there out of desperation at the time but they were fantastic in helping me to research courses at other Universities and even made phonecalls to the individual departments for me. Good luck and hope it all goes well!0 -
Providing that you're not trying to get into a higher tier university (ie Bolton to Durham) than you're already in, then they may let you. Though they may say that you must achieve a certain %age in your first year. Oh, and the course that you want to transfer to must have similar modules to the one at your new choice of uni.
Your best bet is to contact the uni that you would like to transfer to, as I know some unis accept transfer students and others don't.0 -
Definatley contact the uni you are thinking of transferring to, and you also need to consider the time at which you transfer. I didthis a couple of years back, same as you (first year) didn't have any problem at all with the uni, but there was a big hoo ha over the fees. I decided to leave just after xmas and start at Bolton in the Feb term 2004, I then received an invoice for the full years fees for the uni that I had left, it turns out that they had a cut off date, and if you were in attendance after this date and leave then you were liable for all costs associated. Luckily my old PT helped me sort it out, and told them that my attendece was rubbish and that I was gonna be chucked out (total lie) but it worked.
Talk to whoever you need to about finances and stuff, so at least you are aware of all the facts.0
