How to finish a table

I've bought a piece of furniture for my parents for Christmas, its made of American black walnut but unfinished, bare wood.
So I will have to use a varnish or treatment but not sure which. It will be in their lounge so interior. Dad leaves his coffee mugs on furniture so a bit concerned about coffee rings etc.
What would you use, clear varnish, wax, oil or something else?

I would think that Varnish would give the most protection. Maybe 3 coats of Satin varnish because gloss might look a bit much. However, make sure you get a high quality make and test it on some other wood first.0

if it's a nice bit of wood you could use french polish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_polish which if done well will give a great finish, however if it's nothing special use a decent varnish0

I would French polish, but you could also use linseed oil rubbed into the wood.0

French polishing gives a superb finish but in my opinion it is not a simple process for a first-timer to try out on a piece of furniture to be given as a present.
Five or six coats of danish oil would be my choice.Forgotten but not gone.0
