No dial up access, any help?

Running windows xp pro on a laptop thats 2-3 years old and third hand. Last week i tried to connect to the internet with wanadoo broadband but i can't get access. The dial up box gave an error code of 0623 (and 0707) with the detail unable to make connection. I called wanadoo help on the 0870 number (works mobile thankfully) and after running through various tests was advised the dial up networking part of my windows was the problem. Also tried to connect via virgin dial up and same error codes given.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem and connection software with no succes. Also tried restoring from the boot up option with no success. I as having a problem with a hijacker called jimbutts at the time and with my attempts to remove that have obviously messed up something else.
Any guidance is welcome, totally lost without my web and email access.
Would i be best to totally format and start again? Nothing on my machine would be classed as overly important. All other areas of windows seems to be working, word etc and copying cds is my main use apart from the web and i can do all that without any problems.

    Hi

if all else fails try a system restore to a date before your probelms started.
Start - help - undo changes with system restore. Click system restore and choose a date to restore to. May solve your problem.

Back up your data beforehand, as always.

Sounds like an issue with the Winsock, you can use a small free program called WinsockXPfix.exe to restore to defaults, has worked for me more than once.

  • Cheers for the suggestions. System restore didn't work as the first saved date i could restore to was after the problem had occured. Continuing the proof that i've got no idea how to work my machine. I have downloaded the winsock repair so hopefully that will solve it when i give it a try.
    Cheers again.
