Yearly Gas and Electric Usage - Powergen Customer

Options
I switched Electric and Gas from Southern Electric to Powergen January 2006.

It was not easy, however am thinking of switching again as now Powergen have sent me a bill stating that I am over £400 in debt. I was never in debt with Southern Electric. I pay by direct debit each month.

Went on the comparison link (Energyhelpline Cashback) and it states that my yearly usage for Gas and Electric is £668.

However Powergen informs me that my usage is £593.37 for electric and £833.00 for gas. The readings that I have put into the link where from Powergen this morning.

Gas 5332 (2006) to 6329 (2007)
Electric 02511 (2006) to 09252 (2007)

What am I doing wrong?
What would be my best package with maximum discounts? What about Winter Warmer discount etc, never heard of it before now.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance

If you want to do accurate comparisons, you need to enter actual usage in kWh and forget the amount paid in pounds. If your above annual figures are correct, you have used 997 units of gas and 6741 kWh of electricity. The gas units will need to be converted into kWh using a calculator like this depending on your meter (metric/imerial). Rates vary from region to region, so use a reputable comparison site like ukpower to see who comes out best for you.

If you switch using one of the switching websites, and only enter what you are paying, you will get a meaningless figure because they are only interested it getting you to switch supplier and they get their commission.(why else do you think these sites exist if not to make money)

As espresso states you have used 6,741kWh electricity and over 30,000kWh gas(assuming an Imperial meter); so that is double the national average for electricity and 50% more for gas. So £1,400 is about right.

FWIW if the gas meter is imperial (Cu. ft) the kWh is about 31500, if metric (m3) 11100
  • Thanks, I will try it again, sounds like I'm using a lot if its double the national average!
