LV (Liverpool Victoria) or Aviva for car insurance?

Tesco's want to charge me £380.99 for renewal of insurance on my rather battered 8-year old VW Polo. Trawling for alternatives, Aviva have come up at £282 and LV at £286.

LV seem to come highly recommended by Which ...

Just wondered if anyone has had experience of either of these two, which might help me decide.

I have to say, Tesco's WERE very good a couple of years when I ended up having to make two claims (one for vandalism, the other for collision with motorcycle when both of us claimed the other was at fault).

Im with LV, they wanted to charge me to fax my documents over as i needed it for road tax. They refunded it on a complaint within 3 days of posting the letter. So i cant complain really.

Have been with both but cannot really comment on their service as I have not had to claim.

However if you purchase from Aviva through Quidco, today or tomorrow, you can also reduce your costs by getting £80 cashback.

Great tip - many thanks for that, Keith!
  • Tesco's of cause used to be underwritten and administered by the RBS Group which they aren't any more. Last time I checked they were now looking like a broker with fixed wordings and so you may well find that their service has changed anyway.

Both the insurers you mention are fairly mass market and so I would doubt there is a massive difference between them, check the policy differences that are important to you (eg Driving Other Cars, admin fees, driving abroad, windscreen excess etc). Which? for insurance tends to consider the coverage as much, if not more, than the service.

That's all very useful, particularly re Which - I'm never clear how effective their recommendations actually are.
  • I had a car accident which was Not my fault. LV were superb, and would recommend without hesitation.

Many thanks, travellerboy and poppy! I'm very tempted by LV - unfortunately they're not offering eighty quid off on quidco! will have to decide tonight (when the offer ends) whether to grab the money and risk aviva - or go with lv ...
  • Difficult to compare car insurances - all I know is that you only know how good your insurance is when or if you make a claim.

LV and Churchill are the best of generally a rotten bunch !
