We have two in the family with allergies and one with bad exzema so I am always trying to find a cheap alternative that really cleans and is unscented.... I read with interest as to what not to use!
I do love the new red bold though (Silk and Jasmine?) and have used it on a few small loads for myself

The water in this area is quite hard, hence use half detergent(Lidl) and half Washing Soda to soften the water which in turns makes the detergent more effective.0 -
Use a dessert spoon of napisan in each wash. It has everything smelling fresh. Especially good on shirts, t shirts and underwear side. I've got a houseful of boys and the washing practically climbs in the machine by itself.0

My mums wash smells gorgeous, she puts the powder in the drum not in the drawer, she only puts in the fabric conditioner in the drawer. She cleans out the drawer after every wash, to rinse out any conditoner residue left.
Wouldn't it be a good idea if the washing powder and fabric conditioner makers made items that smell the same so when you wash the clothes the smell is concentrated in stead of being dliuted by mixing different smells, so you could have ariel powder, with the same smelling fabric conditioner and tumble dry sheets. And yes the lady in the avatar is me

I think we've been conditioned (no pun intended) by decades of adverts showing housewives smelling piles of washing, that clean clothes have to smell of something April fresh etc - they don't! Clean clothing doesn't smell of anything!
That said...I do love the smell of Comfort, but it's very expensive. A cheap alternative is to spray some of your favourite perfume or cologne (I use Taylor's Eton College cologne) on your linens while they are drying.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0
