What do people do to their machines!?

Been doing a helpdesk thing at college and you should see the state of some of the machines that come in, they manage to disable things they shouldnt, have the most obscure errors etc, and its really hard to find a fault when they dont have a clue about whats wrong in the first place. Anyone else work in an It helpdesk role, and find it well annoying that people dont take care of their computers.
Oh another thing the people im working with are half-wits! Most have applied for uni and have no idea how to build up and whats parts go where etc and we have been doing this for around a year or two!

I am sure you will find lots of people that know what you are talking about. I have never worked on IT helpdesk but I grew up with pcs and their problems and fixing them.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090

Don't even get me started!
Spent hours on a laptop today, the user phones me yesterday telling me the problem and she can't use it. Then phones me back to tell me the problems gone now so it's ok. Talks to me like I'm stupid cos I ask her to bring it to me as I want to find out what the problem is, she says to me "but it's fixed now....", idiot.
Of course it was a temprimental pr*** of a problem but finally got to the bottom of it. Always amazes me how people trust so much important info to a machine that they barely have any idea how it works.
My favourite line is "It crashed and an error message came up, but I just ok'd it..... " . then they expect you to just fix it. moronic circus clowns the lot of them.0 -
I worked on an IT help desk for an airline once and pilots are the worst people in the world to give computers to. They think because they can fly an aeroplane they can do anything and you can't explain anything to them. We had loads of laptops back for repair because the pillocks got upset with them and smashed them over something simple.Nothing to see here, move along.0

There was a local news piece (North West) the other day about a couple who had their laptop stolen from the boot of their car. Their young daughter has very serious (likely terminal) cancer and they have thousands of photos and video etc on the laptop. The whole thing was an emotional tale of it may be their only record of their daughter growing up and pleaded for the thieves to send a copy of the files at the very least and they can keep the laptop as the photos were irreplaceable!!! Although it it heart wrenching stuff, my dad and I still looked at one another and both said "backups?". Could have just as easily been a hard disk failure. I probably don't backup as often as I should but if it is something critical there is no way I'd only have one copy left on my pc."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Yep. Get an external hard drive for £100. I'm sure mosts people's bought music, photo's, work, cv etc... are worth more than that."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
