I just got one - signed up with Quidco.com, and bought one through Misco. 250Gb for about £59, with £4.72 cashback...
Easy to install, just plug it into the mains and then the USB 2.0 port. Up and running in less than a minute!
It's great, backed up all my data now. Much easier than burning ot to CDs.Retired in 2015.

400GB Seagate External USB 2.0 Hard Drive £89.99 seems like a good price

there is a 300gb one on play.com for £60 (i think) reduce by like £100 quid.
you need to make sure that you get a USB one, you can get SATA ones too. The SATA ones connect into your sata card (it is unlikely that you will have one unless ur pc is new)
there is also a 260gb one for £60 in Staples. That is the best one for price available in the high street.
i have go one and they are great

Although I have a 200gb Western Digital USB hardisk I backup to I also use a Buffalo Linkstation. This is basically a hard disk with a network connection.
Beauty of that is that all PC's in the house can use it directly from the netgear router. I also stream video directly to my xbox (XBMC) from it too so it is heavily used.
They are a little more expensive (£120) than the usb versions but have a look below, but I can recommend if you want access from multiple PCs.

Can you get an external HDD that is powered through the USB cable rather than needing a seperate power adaptor? Or do they need too much power.

Western Digital do one called the "Passport"
However, they tend to be a bit dearer than the mains powered ones.

I actually have one of those too, mine is a Smartdisk Firelight 60GB version and is a godsend at work as I can carry everthing I need to support all our PCs on a single pocket size disk.
It comes with a PS/2 adapter so it can draw power from your keyboard if needed but as yet I have not had to use it as it's worked on every machine with a USB socket I've used so far.0
