I think 1p per gram is expensive - Tesco have been selling it for 20p for 500g.
That's what I thought too - that makes the average 500g bag 50p when it's on sale for 18-22p depending on when/where you shop. Looroll - around 30p for a good quality one, that means a nine pack must be around the £2-70 mark or 2 for £5. It does come up at that price but stock up big time when it does - it doesn't go off does it?
Cheese - decent stuff at £5 per kilo. Cathedral City/Pilgrim etc regularly have good offers
Keep doing the maths - porridge at Mr M is cheaper in 2 1 kilo bags than in a 2 kilo bag for example.
I used to have a price book but prices change so much now that it's too much faff so I just try to keep in my head the stuff I buy regularly and/or is expensive to buy. Don't worry about tomatoes at all though - my freezer holds enough home grown ones to last me until I grow the next fresh ones

Linda32 - don't dismiss the value range of cheese out of hand - the strong cheddar is very good imho, and in the 'old days' would have deff passed it over for more expensive, but tbh now I realise how stupid that was!
Thanks, I'll try that :money: I've downbranded on alot of things and really havn't noticed any difference. But havn't on cheese. I must add that I don't normally buy organic cheese, its just that this time it was best price.0 -
Last spring Tescos did a Double The Difference promo, comparing the prices with Asda. From memory, Finish Tablets £11 in Tesco, £5 in Asda, DTD = £12. Use the DTD voucher to buy one of the other 'pay you to take it away' products etc etc. I saw some Turners Rd wine yesterday and got all nostaligic, remembering when Mr T paid me 20p a glass to drink it :rotfl:. Also worked with electric toothbrushes (subsequently sold on ebay
), coffee, washing liquid, fabric conditioner. Fillet steak. Smoked salmon
.
There were several threads at the time, it was v good fun outwitting Mr T who kept changing the T&C's
. Some of the photos of people's shopping looked like corner shops :rotfl:.
Ah, those were the days :j
I was having a serious read of your post when a little chuckle let loose :rotfl:
Love the "outwitting MrT" and them paying YOU to drink the wine :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I don't have a ceiling price really, I have a list of places near me which holds the cheapest but effective items such as £1 for 4 loo rolls in Iceland, along with their kitchen roll at £1.25 for 4 rolls, cold meat is cheaper unless there is anything on offer in the big supermarket, the refills for the toilet freshner thingy are 80p cheaper in Savers than Asda etc. I tend to work off this list for those sorts of things but bread, cold meat, cheese and fresh meat is dependant on where I am able to get to. If I am at my mums I have Iceland and Sainsbury, the town has Asda and Morrissons (if I know there is something good on) and Tesco when I am elsewhere or in the car. At the moment I don't have a car so I do an online shop and Asda have been cheapest everytime and I buy things when they are at the cheapest price, i.e pasta when it is 9p/18p per 500g bag I will buy a good amount in until it is on offer next time.
Same with cheese, I go through huge amounts of it so I buy when on offer and make sure there is a long date so I can buy a good few packs in.
I think it's more about getting things on offer and keeping an eye out for the deals and buying them when you see them, this is the easiest way for me to keep my costs as low as possible.Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011

Sorry to quote myself but 1p per gram is not 50p per 500g but £5  A much better guideline would be 5p per 100g. And a guideline of so much per 100g is even better than trying to do the per gram calculation as apart from saffron who buys anything by the gram? (Apart from GQ's neighbours of course

I wont buy milk more than 99p for 4pints i think asda do their 1% 89p for 4 pints so i try to get that.
I will only buy buuter/marg on offer and try not to spend over £1 for a tub unless the bigger tub is on offer and it works out cheaper.
Farmfoods do a huge Chedder block for £5 its a 1kg block and believe me we get through cheese lol
tesco do some lovely ham called ham trim i think its £2.20 but it looks and tastes like the ham off the bone i keep it in an air tight tub and it keeps longer.
Every 9 months i go to an asian supermarket and get a 10kg sack of rice for about £9 and it lasts, In asda i get the large bag of pasta for £3.
I buy whoopsied bread/cobs/meat/ etc that i either use straight away or chuck in the freezerDs2 born 3/4/12 8lbs 8.5:j
