From what has been posted so far they haven't done this. Indeed, it appears they are actually refusing to do this, thereby breaching their own T&Cs.

* Condition 7.4 (last para)
In summary:
Condition 7.1 covers the notification of 'incorrect payments' from the account. OP has complied with this condition.
Condition 7.3(b) deals with the remedies available for 'incorrect payments', and says they'll trace the payment for you.
Condition 7.4(b) says, however, that they're not responsible if you provided the wrong account details, BUT...goes on to say they'll use the 'reasonable efforts' mentioned above to help you resolve the matter.
And that's why OP needs to make a complaint.
Cool that clears that one up for me thanks :T0 -
There is also a statement from the FSA somewhere on the web that the sending bank should make reasonsble efforts or your behalf to get back the incorrectly directed payment0

It also says that, providing it's allowed in the 'framework contract' (your account T&Cs?), the bank may charge for this service.0 -
In my case Littlewoods use a letter and numbers (6 numbers) so how on earth would an internet banking site use this without flagging up a error?0
-
I've noticed on some OLB sites that they simply don't allow you to enter invalid characters, so if you entered 'A123456', what is actually sent to the bank is '123456'.
Still, in your case, yes, it would be flagged up as an error (incorrect number of digits)
But every catalog company is not identical. Some may use 8-digit customer numbers.0 -

The Littlewoods Very account is 8 digits all numbers
The OP does not state the name of the mail order company , however JD Williams and Freemans and La Redoute do not use Nat West
Littlewoods use sort code 62-13-35 a/c 00000000 , this sort code http://findsortcodes.co.uk/sortcode/621335 is not at a branch used by personal customers
The Data Protection Act does not prevent a bank from disclosing the details of the name of a business accountHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
This is a very long shot, try Googling the sort code and account number, it may reveal a business name...worth a tryDFW'er - Lightbulb moment : 31st July 2009 - £18,499
