Broken Phone

I have an 20 month old HTC Desire mobile phone which has stopped working altogether, it will not even boot up. When new it was £450 ish so it's not a cheapo by any means.

I can't take it back to the seller as they have gone out of business but I seem to remember that if an electrical item is under 6 years old then I still have certain rights.

Can anyone tell me if this is so as I really want to get the phone working again and HTC have a repair depot in Milton Keynes where I could send it.

Thanks.

All HTC products have a 24 month warranty in the UK.

Contact HTC on 0845 890 0079 and they should arrange for it to be repaired.

The "up to 6 years" applies to the retailer, not the manufacturer...

If you pay by credit card and the goods are over the value of £100, you also have the same rights with your credit card company as you would have had with the retailer. Even if you just pay a deposit on your card, you're covered for the full amount.

But if you paid by debit card, since your rights are with the retailer your in effect !!!!!!ed and completely relying on the warranty / goodwill of manufacturer.

Don't forget that after 6 months from the date of purchase it is down to you to prove the fault was inherant, that means getting an independant engineers report saying the fault was present at the time of manufacture.

This forms part of your statutory rights, which are with the retailer. This the retailer is no more, there's no point paying for a report thats of no good to anybody.
  • Thanks all. I contacted HTC and they confirm the phone is covered by a 2 year warranty and have arranged for the phone to be collected by courier and repaired.
