I have a tefal gen iron this one is just over a year old , I dropped the tefal one before that and it was replaced like for like through shop insurance. My mother had a iron from aldi , I found no difference in the time taken to iron, however I can recollect that the button could be switched to stay down on the aldi one , The tefal one as soon as you take your finger off the button the steam stops . I sometimes find this is a bother especially when trying to do bedding. If I had to start from scratch i would go for the cheaper model, these were not available to us at the first purchase.

Thought this might be of interest, they did a review of steam irons on Which in December the Best Buys are below

    Philips GC6103 Provapor Azur Doublespeed £90 80% effectiveness, (cheapest £74.99 on amazon.co.uk)

    Rowenta DG7140 Pro Precision £175 76% effectiveness

They also had on test some steam irons and even the best buys did no better than 70% effectiveness.

So sounds like they are worth the extra money etc.. and the Philips looks like a good buy too.
