Unhappy with blinds installation

Hi All,

Thought I'd drop you guys a note, before I call citizens advice bureau to see whether my problem is worth pursuing.

It's a long boring story but the general gist is :

My mum had some blinds put into the conservatory. When I came home and saw them, I pointed out some shoddy things. There is a base bar which is attached to the window ledge so the blind can be pulled right the way down to the ledge (it's hard to explain.) Anyway, the base bar they installed was white and our window ledge is a mahogany colour. I thought it looked awful and I asked her why she got white, to which she replied 'no I presumed that was the only colour.'

She called the designer round and she explained she didn't like the colour. Then he said 'Oh, I have an idea', then he went to his car and brought out a dark brown base bar which looked a lot better against the mahogany ledge.

Now, he never told my Mum about this brown base bar at the point of sale, otherwise she would have asked for that colour. And the fact that he said 'Oh I have an idea', almost proves that he suggest it initially as it had only occurred to him.

Now, the company in question are refusing to change the bars without a fee... £690.55!!!!

Where do I stand? Any ideas? Any help greatly appreciated. x

blinds etc. come in a default white colour, it is usually up to the buyer to ask if they have other colours. just like you go to buy a new car or even a sofa , the showroom will have 1 on display but you dont assume thats the only colour you would ask what other colours are available.
I asked her why she got white, to which she replied 'no I presumed that was the only colour.'

this would assume your mother never asked about other colours and accepted the white one, so they are under no obligation to change this FOC just because someone else has said they dont like it.

Can you find the mahogany base bars for sale online? They should be easy enough to fit.

As above, the fact they didn't tell you above alternative colours doesn't mean you have a case. It's no different to sellers that will start by showing you a more expensive product, then if your not interested switch to cheaper deals. If she wasn't happy with the white, she should have mentioned this to see if they had something else on offer rather than changing her mind after.
