It looks like that there will be a few significant changes to the MoT test from early 2012.

Here is a link to the proposed new MoT tester's manual....

its mainly just changes that should of been included from the start anyway.. no real issues for me.. had to wire up the towbar not long ago as i heard it was gonna be part of the test.. but apparently the new bits on the 2012 test are just advisories till around april 2012..

In the main it does seem to be sensible additions - battery must be secure, no splits allowed in joint boots etc.

The requirement for a moveable drivers seat seems daft though, unless they are bringing in minimum and maximum inside leg measurements as part of the drivers licence?

Maybe there will have to be a standard leg length as part of the driving test.:D

I'm sure I've had both these things rectified in MOT already.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Loose batteries and split boots are things that any decent tester would bring to the attention of the owner, either verbally or as an 'Advisory' addition to the MoT test, but neither was sufficient reason for a test failure except in the case of outer CV boots and propshaft 'donut' couplings.

The current MoT test only checks for 'security' of the seats, the revised version also requires the drivers seat to be moveable fore and aft.
However, the 'Reason for Rejection' is 'adjustment mechanism not functioning as intended', so I guess I'll either get mine working, or remove it entirely and bolt the seats direct to the floor.

The towbar requirement looks worse than it is. There is a full function test for cars with 13 pin euro connectors, but for 7 pin connectors it requires a check of only security and condition, not function (or required fitment).

I'm not sure that will work. I specifically queried this change because I have an car that has a fixed position driving seat (from new.) The response was that if an adjustable driving seat was originally fitted then it needs to adjust to pass, otherwise fixed is OK. It may depend on the interpretation of an individual tester though.

According to the manual, the 13 pin is not tested for full function, just position lamps, stop lamps, direction indicators and fog lamp.

Well, neither the SVA (relevant at the time of registration) or current IVA manuals require adjustable seats, just that they must lock in all positions provided for normal use. (So that's 2 of my cars covered then ) One would hope the MoT stipulation would be read in the same spirit.
