Travelodge just cancelled the rooms we'd bought ages ago in the sale!

Am supposed to be on a girly weekend in Stratford-upon-Avon, doing our Christmas shopping, having a nice meal out etc.
We booked our rooms at the Travelodge ages ago in the sale. Got a bargain price - I think they were about £15 each.
Yesterday, Travelodge phoned to say the Stratford-upon-Avon Travelodge was overbooked. We could either have a refund or stay in one a few miles away.
Staying a few miles away just wouldn't be the same and anyway, we were annoyed and didn't see why we should accept that. We opted for a refund.
Did anyone else know Travelodge did this? Apparently it's in their terms and conditions but I'm afraid I never read them.
I've booked loads of rooms in the past in the Travelodge sale and got some great bargains and this has never happened before. It really puts me off booking again.
When you get a room for £15, you can't cancel. I really don't see why they should be able to!
I'm guessing they sell rooms for that price, but if customers come along later and are willing to pay the full £65 for the room, that they take them instead. That doesn't seem right. They should offer less rooms in the sale if they aren't going to be able to honour the bookings!

I have a feeling this is not at all unusual. Search for "Travelodge" on this forum and you will see!
I agree with you though that it should not be possible to overbook.
It has never happened to me....yet.0 -
Travelodge overbook rooms (I'd heard that already) in the expectation that not everyone who has booked a room will actually show up.
BUT in my case, the room was booked for tonight but I was informed yesterday that it was full. So how did they know that not everyone was going to show up tonight? Or do you reckon that they had a lot of people who'd booked Friday AND Saturday who all showed up?0 -
i have heard about something simialar and know that most hotels do over book on purpose as they know some wont show up. how ever i have not heard of cancelling in advance i can only guess they have had a major overbook maybe by accident and are rining around the people that got the rooms at cheapest price offeringrefunds or trasnfers.
still not right though.0 -
It makes me anxious because I'm going on a trip to London the weekend before Christmas. Similarly booked cheap Travelodge room for two nights - £15 for a Saturday night in London is brilliant isn't it? Worried now that I'll get there and find I've no room!0

if you do get there and tehre is no room they have to find you room at nother hotel i know that much. son they cant just leave you stranded. but must say turning up i have never had a problem.0

I have to say I've always thought it was a rare occurrence but I've stayed in Travelodge 4 times in the last couple of weeks arriving lateish (9.30-10pm) and each time they wanted to move me due to an oversell! It appeared that it was actually due to maintenance issues taking rooms offline rather than being intentionality oversold - I guess they are cutting down on these budgets.
3 times it was outer London and after some discussion they moved me into Central London which was OK. The fourth was in Crewe late at night and I point blank refused and ended up with a refund and a room with no bathroom light.
So I guess the moral of the story is try and arrive early or call ahead and let them you you are definitely coming or perhaps like me in London see if they are looking to move people as you might get a better location.0 -
