Engagement Ring - Crisis!

Hello All,
I am absoloutely distraught. I lost my engagement ring last night, at a bowling alley. I bowled the ball, and my ring just flew off with said ball. We had everyone looking for it, the staff included and it hasn't been found. I just don't understand how it could have vanished - i've literally done nothing except cry.
It's covered on our home insurance, so i've contacted them and they seem willing to pay out - like for like. But that isn't helping because it was a one off, i'll never find one the same plus it was a bargain too. It's actually impossible to replace things of sentimental value.
My OH has been lovely and we're going to go out later to see if we can find anything similar. I honestly, had no idea it would just fly off and feel so stupid.

Oh that is really awful! I really feel for you. I was really worried about loosing mine, although it is covered by the home insurance of course, u just can't replace it can you?! I cried for like an hour when a necklace broke that OH got me our first Christmas, it only cost about £20 (I think) but I was distraught.
Just concentrate on how lovely ur OH has been about it (although in some way that made me feel worse about the necklace...) I know it's not the same thing, but you won't be the first or the last to do it, n it is not your fault and don't blame your self, these things happen. I was doing the "I should have taken better care of it" thing and OH was being soo nice (making me feel even more guilty) and he said that I have worn it practically everyday for 4 years, it wasn't that expensive, and what did I expect?
Jut wanted you to know that similar things have happened, and it still may be found, or you may find something fantastic today. Hope it all works out for you.:T0 -
Oh bless you!! I can totally imagine how you must be feeling (my ring is also a one off - made using the stones from my Grandma's engagement ring, and my 21st Birthday ring that MrD gave me).
I have no words of advice. The only thing I can think of is that you are left handed and bowl with your left hand? Is there anyway it came off and is inside the ball? I'm assuming you will have rattled every one to check? At least the bowling place knows you've lost it - I sincerely hope it is found and returned to you.
The only thing I will add - is that although your old ring had so much sentiment attached to it - it doesn't mean your next one won't have the same if not more. It won't be the same - it will be different - but different isn't always necessarily worse.

Just wanted to send you a hug.
I did write a post on my phone earlier and thought it had posted but it hadnt! It basically said similar to what Mrs Drink said, I would look for a new ring but bear in mind you wont find exactly the same ring, keep an open mind, you may fall in love with a completely different ring, but that isnt a bad thing and it will in time be just as sentimental. I guess Im trying to say you wont replace your lost ring but in time your new ring wont be a 'replacement' ring- it will be just as special.
You have got me thinking though- im right handed but do bowl left handed and its never crossed my mind it could come off- dont feel stupid its happened, if it did come off that easily though maybe you should go down a half size or so.0 -
Oh, you poor thing! ((((hugs))))
I've got everything crossed that the bowling alley find it; after all, it can't just have disappeared into thin air, and perhaps it will turn up. If not, I have no better words than those of MrsDrink.
If it's any consolation, you are by no means the only person this has happened to. My H2B's aunt lost her engagement ring on the day she was proposed to! They were boating on a lake, and she was running her hand through the water, admiring how the ring looked underwater, and you can guess what happened next...
You clearly have a lovely lovely H2B anyway, and that is the most important thing.

i lost a stone out of mine a few weeks back and after 8 years wear for £50 it had served me well imo..have a new one now as the repair would have cost more than the ring originally did..second hand my new one is but is very different to my old one and i love it.
hope you can find another you happy withHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0 -
Massive hugs! Agree with the advice that a new ring can be different not worse, it might even serve as a reminder of the time when your OH was so nice about it.
Also maybe you could take a metal detector to the bowling alley to have a look? I think you can hire them from tool hire places.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks everyone.
My partner and I have been round town and managed to locate one similar version, but in rose gold rather than white gold; however, it's otherwise similar which is the main thing I hoped to achieve. Unfortunately, it's £140 more than the previous ring, so we're hoping the insurance might stretch the budget a little, otherwise my OH has said we'll put towards it - bless him. I'm very lucky!
Anyone any experience of Insurance companies with this sort of thing? My lost ring was only 2 mnths old and cost £250.0 -
I know you have said that you have located one but dont rush out and buy one just yet, give it a week or so.
Have you rang the local police station, you may have lost it outside somewhere and its been handed in. You never know.
As for the insurance, they just wont pay you over the odds for your ring, have you looked as to how much your excess is.
They will probably send you vouchers to go to a jewellers of their choice. You can ask for cash but the payment to you will
be lower as they have discount deals with specific jewellers.
Sometimes its not worth even claiming, if your excess is say £200 and your premiums go up because of your loss
Good luck, it may well turn up, I hope so.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I would also wait before I bought it, for both the insurance money and also to see if it turns up. Whilst I haven't been in your situation
I know that things that should be "right there" seemingly vanish for a day or two and will turn up. Especially if you know where you lost it.
In a day or two when your emotions have calmed down a little go into the bowling alley and ask if it has turned up. If the people working there have no idea what you're talking about after you leave I would write to the management and ask if they can help make all the staff aware so they can keep an eye out for it.
I'm sure the mechanisms for the bowling balls etc will be serviced at some point, you can ask when roughly that is likely to be so you can ring up in 6 months and see if it turned up in the process.
Perhaps we can find similar online and in budget if you let us? It'd be a shame to have to change "colour" of the ring to get the same style
I'm sorry if this is an upsetting thing to say but I wonder if your next ring should be a size smaller? My uncle is a jeweller and if it was up to him all rings would be so tight they'd cut off circulation to the fingerHowever, it should be that it is difficult to remove even when you tug on it slightly. After a short while it does become completely comfortable so I barely feel it and taking it on and off becomes a little easier too.

Thanks again!
I do actually blame losing 2 stone in the last 4 months as to how it's potentially become more loose and I was thinking about having it made smaller, only the other day! Sods law. That said, I still didn't think it was loose enough to fly off!
The bowling alley are servicing the machines on Monday, talk about luck, so they're going to phone me if they find it and still have my number/details. I phoned them this morning and they knew what i was talkin about which is a good sign!
Any extra money that needs to be spent, we could really do without spending, so we're definitely waiting for the insurance companies verdict on Monday and to be honest, i'm not holding my breath as well as hearing back from the bowling alley on Monday.
The ring that's lost was a 14ct white gold, marquise cut diamond 0.15ct, quite a high setting. It was 2nd hand, from an old fashioned jewellers hence it was £250 - a price difficult to beat, i think.
Thanks all for your continued help!
