Are benefits affected?

I am posting this on behalf of a friend, hope you can help

My friends Mum is ill and needs to move closer to her family - she has not, so far, had success in finding accomodation due to property offered not being close enough to family - so will probably have to stay at her daughter's for a while

The problem my friend has is this: She has housing and council tax benefits and is worried that these will be affected if she has her mother to stay with her and her mother will not stay unless she has proof that benefits will not be affected - I thought that as her Mother would probably pay something towards her keep that benefits would be affected. Also does anyone know how long she would be allowed to stay

I have tried checking this out online but had no results. My friend is worried about going to the Council about this in case they assume this is going to happen and stop her benefits

Any advice please
