Read the whole thread, it's mostly about too many cleaning products around that have reduced our immunity.

Let kids get mucky, and do what kids do.

The only asthmatic I knew as a child was my grand-dad, and he must have been 70ish when it started. In my year at school circa mid 70's there was not one asthmatic.

Doctors are too quick to hand out inhalers and tell people they are ashmatic for fear of come back (sorry, it's the age we live in), and quite often this "diagnosis" satisfies the mums that want a medical conditon name as this takes the blame away from them for their uber clean, cotton wool, namby pamby lifestyle. Also I think having a medical condition, the longer the name the better, gives some mums a greater sense of kudos at the school gates.

I suppose there just wasn't enough time for me to get muddy enough before my diagnosis at 20 months...

    (Also, read what thread?)

Ah right, its an article more than a thread so I didn't know what you meant. There is some speculation by an 'expert' with no credentials listed that allergies are a result of cleanliness, but also a statement by an allergy sufferer who grow up on a farm, so nothing very conclusive either way!

I suspect that there are lots of factors causing allergies, and maybe excessive hygiene is one of them but I certainly don't think its the only one.
