Last year I bought my first Sat Nav, a Tom Tom Go Live 1005. It cost about £250 or so but seemed the cream of the crop so great. That is until now, a year later.
To get new maps, four a year, will cost £59.96.
To get another year of the Live service will cost £47.50 a year. I knew about this one and I've used the Google search function loads of times (but now I have a smartphone).
I see the need for updated maps but I don't think I mentally signed up for a near £110 annual cost to keep the functionality I have now.
If I'm right, there is a Garmin thing which gives you lifetime map updates. Quite tempting I know.
Of course, if anyone knows a better (cheaper) way to get updated maps and so forth then please let me know. I would much prefer to do this than use my phone.

Yeah, thought of that, but so have Tom Tom !
The older your map, the more expensive the update ! Though I know you could soldier on indefinitely I suppose.
I'm actually looking at my Samsung S2 now with Google maps but even at 4.3" it is significantly smaller than the 5" Tom Tom. The Tom Tom is also a proprietary system, whereas the phone is not.0 -
The best option IMO is to run the old maps for as long as you can cope and then sell the unit and buy another when you can't.
(unless you need to update the maps to continue using the Live thing, and you really need to use that?)0 -
If you have a smartphone, why not run google navigation instead?0

Bought an offer for UK and Rep. of Ireland on the TomTom Home site in July this year, 1 year map updates plus an extra 6 months free including initial update to latest map for £24.75.0
