Mascara for sensitive eyes - anyone recommend? - UPDATE, IT WORKED!

I am having problems finding a mascara that doesn't irritate my eyes after a couple of hours - last one I tried was the Boots No 7 'Sensitive' one, but I still ended up with bloodshot and runny eyes.

I'm finding it very expensive trying to find one that I can wear without problems, and I'm fed up of throwing expensive supposedly 'hypo-allergenic' ones away after just a couple of uses.

Anyone got any recommendations?

BTW I don't wear contact lenses (any longer) but do wear specs (v. short-sighted!)

  • Clinique worked for me - you can get the smaller versions off ebay to try before buying the full size. Do you wear eyeshadow? that irritates my eyes too.

    Hi

My sister has sensitive eyes and she swears by Clinique Gentle Waterproof Mascara. It is about £11. If that is too pricey, you can always get testers of mascaras on most makeup counters if you ask nicely and tell them why you need a tester. At least that way, you won't have shelled out on something you can't wear.

    Good luck. :o

Sounds like Clinique is a good one to try - especially if it's waterproof, as if it does make my eyes all runny at least the mascara will stay put!

Many thanks to both of you for replying - I will buy this as my next mascara to try.

  • I used to have the same problem, and it was suggested that I got my eyelashes tinted, which is what I done. Dont have to pay for msacara anymore and dont have to worry about puttin any on anymore. just a suggestion for you :o)

That's a good idea too (eyelash tinting) which I have tried before, but the problem is that because I wear specs the effect of the tint is not so obvious. Also my eyelashes are a bit thin and sparse now (creeping age,) so it doesn't show so well as a few coats of mascara.

I might try both though - I have already ordered the Clinique mascara to try, so I might have my lashes tinted as well for the days when I don't want to bother with make-up.

    Great ideas folks, many thanks!

  • On a similar subject, does anyone know of a liquid eyeliner for sensitive eyes? The ones I usually try irritate my eyes to hell and I have to use a pencil which doesn't last as long.

  • :j I thought I had sensitive eyes until I had a small lump appear on one eyelid last year , which really hurt, went to the eye unit at local hospital . I thought I had got something in my eye (I should point out I work in office above a metal foundry) at work . I then found out I have an eye condition called blepheritis, which because it had been left untreated had caused a cyst. I had never heard of it , and the treatment is so simple (I am not saying here what it is because it is important for people to get checked themselves). All those years of spending a fortune on expensive mascaras and eye shadows and then having to bin them coz they made my eyes so sore after an hour or two , and the whole time all I needed to do was get diagnosed and treated for a condition which is quite common.
Please get checked at your local opthalmic unit before you waste any more money !
If the opthalmic unit say you are clear of this condition and you want a good fragrance free fibre free recommendation for mascara I would suggest Clinique , but Not the waterproof one , I found that one has fibres in which irritate after a few hours . The one I always end up coming back to is the naturally glossy mascara

I have never had problems with this one .

I have real issues with eye make up. I am very sensitive to certain brands they actually redden my eyes visibly and cause a burning sensation. The one brand i have never had any problems with is clinque. The mascara is fantastic, expensive but well worth it if you have problems and probably less expensive in the long term, if you are throwing cheaper versions away all the time.
