Paypal problem

Hi folks,
I've been using paypal for a while now without too much problem thankfully. Just today I have been sent an email from them saying they are carrying out an "Investigation into a Recent Transaction" -a payment I received from something I sold- and they require more information. They are asking if I have posted the item etc.

I've not seen this before and I was wondering if this was the start of a Paypal enquiry instigated by the buyer? Have you guys experienced this before and it's nothing to worry about?

Check it's actually from Paypal, as opposed to a SCAM email.

Yeah thanks, was wondering that myself but there was no link to clink on the mail. When I logged into Paypal the normal way there was the "resolution centre: your account has open issues" warning at the top of the overview page so it seems to be genuine.

When you click on the resolve issue tab is brings up these options:

Please provide some additional information about this transaction.

I have not sent the item yet.
I posted the item and can provide tracking information
I have already provided a refund.
None of these options apply to me.
  • I would say the buyer has started an application for a refund. It looks like they are claiming not to have received the item. You will need proper tracking info as proof of sending. A post office 'receipt of posting' is not enough for PayPal. Unless you can actually prove the buyer received the item by signing for it, for example, you will have the money taken from your account and refunded back to them. And PayPal almost always finds in favour of the buyer. Sellers are ripped off regularly like this by PayPal. You could try contacting the buyer to try and resolve things first.

Thanks, I was wondering whether is was the start of that sort of process but it doesn't specifically say that and also in the original email I received it says this:

One of the benefits of using PayPal is that we make every effort to alert you to potentially problematic transactions. Our goal is to help you make sound business decisions.

From time to time, we request additional information about PayPal payments.
This is a security measure meant to protect you from problem transactions.

We would like to learn more about this transaction. Please log in to your PayPal account and provide some information.

We strongly advise that you do not send the item until our investigation is complete. If you have already sent the item, please log in and let us know where you sent it.

We have placed a temporary hold on the funds until the investigation is complete.

Either way, it doesn't sound good! The buyer has left positive feedback -I guess that means nothing in a paypal enquiry?
